Both myself and Craig are huge fans of the duo format in jazz.
This is our second album as a duo and should have been recorded
eighteen months earlier but had to be postponed due to the pandemic,
Consequently, it's had a lot of time to develop in our minds, The duo
format gives you a freedom to do so much spontaneously, although it
has to be with like minded people,
The depth of material for this type of project is so large that our
biggest problem is what to leave out, Recorded a week earlier or for
that matter a week later, the choice of songs could have been entirely
different. This is what we felt like playing on the day.
This is a tribute to some of our heroes from the past. In my case,
the ones I've chosen are all primarily cornet players. Ruby Braff,
Don Goldie, Rex Stewart, Bobby Hackett, Muggsy Spanier and Dick
Cathcart. In Craig's case, past giants of the piano like Fat's Waller,
Ellis Larkins, Ralph Sutton, Dick Hyman, who's still with us, and
Oscar Peterson.
This album was recorded at Craig's house using his wonderful
Steinway grand piano, which coincidentally is the one that Steinway
provided to Rachmaninoff when he came to Britain in need of an
instrument for practice. The instrument has quite a provenance, but is
in fine hands with Craig,
For my part, I'm playing an Eclipse Long-model cornet. Recently
acquired by me and manufactured by Leigh McKinney in Luton UK,
and I'm having the time of my life playing on it.
If you have half the fun listening to this album as we had making it,
you're in for a good time.
